The Van Gogh Project wins International award From The Department of Foreign Affairs and International trade 8/15/2000
On behalf of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada, I am happy to endorse the international Van Gogh Project. Canadian artist Cameron Cross has proven to be the creator of this truly unique, international art project. Mr. Cross has explicitly created the idea of seven 80-foot steel easels, each depicting a 24 x 32-foot version of Vincent van Gogh's seven Sunflower Paintings. These seven works of art will be erected in seven different countries spanning the globe. The first two easels have been successfully completed (Canada and Australia) and the remaining five sites have been carefully researched, with proposals ready. Mr. Cross has demonstrated his qualifications as a professional artist through his university education and his dedication to The Van Gogh Project. He has been actively involved in organizing volunteers, overseeing construction work as well as coordinating promotion and media. As an artist, Mr. Cross possesses the unique artistic skills and talents to paint these colossal works of art. Mr. Cross is the only person able to complete the remaining portion of this project. It is the intention of The Van Gogh Project to create a "sister city" connection between all seven sites involved. The sites have been selected due to their connection to sunflower agriculture or to Vincent van Gogh himself. His relationship with these sites is integral to the successful launch of all seven easels. Mr. Cross is in the process of being awarded an International Arts Promotion Grant from our Department. This grant is awadred to Canadian artists and arts groups who have successfully demonstrated an art project of international merit. Yours truly, Yves Pepin Head (Visual and Media Arts) International Cultural Relations
