Cameron's thoughts on The Big Easel
8/8/2010
The Big Easel has expanded to include other artists' work. The Big Easel will now be erected in a select number of cities, around the world, to showcase local contemporary painting, by local contemporary artists. Once a big easel is established in a city, there will be a 'call for submission' established by a local committee. An artist's image will be chosen, and she or he will paint the 7 metre x 10 metre canvas. The painting will then be hoisted by crane and secured to the easel. This painitng will stay on the easel for a specific length of time, then taken down, and the whole process started over. Each year, a new painting, by a different artist will grace the easel. The easel will remain a constant fixture on the landscape, but the painting will change in theme and style. It is our belief that the easel acts as an internationally recognized symbol of art. The easel can be found in every country on earth, and is used by the worlds artists regardless of their religion, ethnicity or cultural systems. The easel is not only revered as a symbol of high art, but, when constructed in this enormous scale, it demonstrates a feeling of intrigue. People from all over the world seem to connect to this enormous, unique landmark. Taking a traditional representation of visual art - the painting on an easel - and enlarging it to enormous proportions, changes the viewers perception of this image. The easel is now a landmark, it is now a contempory work of public sculpture. Cameron Cross
